IS THE HARDBALL RALLY A RACE?

The Hardball Rally is NOT a wheel-to-wheel road race. Registered participants must NOT compete against each other in any manner that is not sanctioned by rally officials. All entrants are responsible for driving on public roads at or below posted speed limits.

WHAT TYPE OF RALLY IS THIS?

The Hardball Rally is modeled on the international sport of Rogaining—where teams of two or more use map and compass, to visit as many checkpoints as possible within a given time. As in Rogaining, Hardball Rally checkpoints are worth different point values based on how difficult they are to reach, and what adventure challenge must be completed. Instead of a map and compass, Hardball Rally teams use an official challenge guide to navigate between checkpoints and score progress. Though the order of checkpoints is unspecified, some may be marked mandatory for stage completion. So, teams must formulate a point gathering strategy (e.g. mandatory checkpoints plus majority of one-point optional checkpoints), which allows them to arrive on time at the finish. Every minute that a team is early or late to the finish results in large point deductions from their score—so keeping track of elapsed time is important.

WHAT IS THE 2017 ROUTE?

The inaugural Hardball Rally will launch from the fabulous Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Worley, ID—bound for checkpoint glory and ballgames in such far-flung places as Walla Walla, The Columbia River Gorge, Portland, Astoria, Tacoma, and Seattle.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I BREAK DOWN DURING THE EVENT

Even though it is the responsibility of every team to bring a properly prepared vehicle to the rally, sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men can simply go awry. For those unexpected moments, an official rescue vehicle will follow the rally to offer mechanical assistance and trailer transport.

CAN INTERNATIONAL TEAMS PARTICIPATE?

Absolutely! The Hardball Rally welcomes drivers and co-drivers from around the world. We can think of no better place to rub shoulders with like-minded driving enthusiasts than at a Hardball Rally.

WHAT DOCUMENTS WILL I NEED TO BRING?

In addition to presenting a valid driver’s license, international driving permit (if a non U.S. or Canadian driver), and vehicle registration to rally organizers, you will also need proof of automobile insurance.

CAN I HAVE MY VEHICLE SHIPPED TO THE EVENT?

There is ample room at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel to receive a shipped vehicle. While the Hardball Rally does not endorse any single carrier for the event, there are several that we can recommend for hire. Please contact us for company information.

CAN I ACQUIRE PERSONAL SPONSORS TO OFFSET, OR COVER MY FEE?

The short answer is yes. But, only with prior written permission from rally organizers. Personal sponsors cannot be in direct competition with rally sponsors. It is therefore imperative that personal sponsors be approved by the rally committee before having their logos placed on your vehicle, or rally clothing. Please email all personal sponsor requests to the rally office before May 31, 2017. No personal sponsor requests will be accepted past the official registration deadline.

HOW WILL VEHICLE SECURITY BE HANDLED?

Secure parking will be provided at ballparks, and overnight hotel accommodations.

WILL THERE BE LUGGAGE SERVICE?

Yes, luggage wranglers will be on hand to transport your belongings. Drop your bags off in the morning, and they’ll be waiting for you at the hotel. Limit: (2) pieces of checked luggage per participant.

WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND I BRING SPARE PARTS FOR THE CAR?

The Hardball Rally wants everyone to make it to Seattle. Driving cross-country is never the best time to test the upper limits of a spongy radiator hose, or worn fan belt. Packing a few “essentials” can help speed recovery from a breakdown. In addition to carrying replacement parts, please drive your vehicle at least 200 miles before rally check-in. Issues caught and remedied before the event, will lessen your odds of getting stuck on the side of the road.

RECOMMENDED PARTS: Fan belts, coolant hoses, distributor cap and rotor, points and condenser, fuel filters, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, fuel pump, extra oil and filter, spare tire, jack and lug wrench, fire extinguisher, jumper cables, tow strap, second set of keys, tools unique to your car.

DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT TO PARTICIPATE?

Whether you plan to rally in the competitive class, or touring class, you’ll need an Apple iOS or Android mobile phone to access the Hardball Rally navigation app. Driving teams will receive instructions on how to use the app at rally check-in. All route instructions, social media connections, and point-of-interest commentary will be contained in the app.

In addition to a mobile phone, competitive teams will also want to carry a stop watch, or atomic clock that can be synchronized to official rally time. Arriving exactly on time at final checkpoints is a critical component of winning. Penalties accrue every minute your vehicle is early or late across a finish line.

WILL I BE REQUIRED TO APPLY TEMPORARY GRAPHICS TO MY CAR?

All Hardball Rally teams will receive a black or white, removable-vinyl decal pack to install on their cars. Participating vehicles must be wearing their official rally decals, when they arrive at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel for check-in. Decal packs will be issued one month prior to the event.

PLEASE NOTE: Should additional sponsor graphics need to be placed on vehicles after decal pack delivery, a professional installer will be on hand at the hotel to apply the new logos.
